Diving Highlights: Lava Flow and Batu Kapal
During our recent trip to the Banda Sea, we had the opportunity to dive at the iconic Lava Flow site near Gunung Api. This site is renowned for its vibrant hard-coral gardens that have thrived following the volcanic eruption in the 1980s. The visibility was an impressive 30 meters, allowing us to fully appreciate the intricate coral structures and the bustling marine life, including schooling fusiliers and the occasional turtle gliding by. We visited in late October, catching the tail end of the hammerhead season, which added an extra thrill to the dive.
Another standout site was Batu Kapal, known for its unique rock formations resembling a ship. Here, we encountered a variety of macro life, such as frogfish and the elusive mandarinfish. The mild currents made it an enjoyable dive for those with an Advanced Open Water certification and at least 30 logged dives. The water temperature was a comfortable 28°C, perfect for extended bottom times.
Exploring Pulau Hatta and Historical Context
Our itinerary included a day trip to Pulau Hatta, where the pristine reefs offered some of the best snorkeling opportunities we’ve experienced. With visibility reaching up to 40 meters, the underwater landscapes were nothing short of spectacular. The island is also a great spot for spotting larger pelagic species, thanks to the nutrient-rich waters surrounding it.
- Departure: Ambon (AMQ)
- Duration: 7 days
- Cost: $350-500 per night for premium liveaboards
Beyond the underwater attractions, the Banda Islands are steeped in spice-trade history. We took a break from diving to visit Fort Belgica and learn about the region’s rich past in the nutmeg trade. The historical context added depth to our trip, making it not just a diving adventure but also a cultural exploration.
